Social Failures

The typical social event professional (from wedding planners to caterers and photographers to DJ's) struggles to find new clients because they never leverage the power of relationships.

They assume that their customers are not likely to become repeat clients - and after the party's over they fail to keep in touch.

The unsuccessful event pro says, "Why should I waste my time following up with a bride after the wedding is over? It's not like she's going to hire me again any time soon."

It's this type of faulty thinking that causes many event people to fail.

The successful event business owner says, "Of course I keep in touch with my brides! They're not going to get married again soon - but they've got sisters, brothers, cousins, friends and co-workers. When I get referrals I don't have to sell hard and I don't have to deal with price shoppers."

And this applies to corporate event pros even more so!

Referrals are your easiest sales and your best customers. They trust you and they're willing to listen to your advice. They don't want to waste time shopping for price. So, are you getting enough referrals?

Here's a few ways to get more referrals - or should I say "earn more referrals" from your clients.

  1. Amaze Your Clients. If you want to be successful don't give them a good deal for the price, give them a remarkable deal. And then give them the very best personal service in your industry. Being good enough isn't good enough.
  2. Know Your Clients. Where did they grow up? When is there birthday? What college did they attend? What's their biggest passion in life? What's their favorite restaurant? Hobby? Teams? If they're a social event client - what do they do for a living and how can you help them? If they're a business client - what do they do for fun? If you don't ask it shows you don't really care.
  3. Connect. Use social media tools like LinkedIn with every B2B customer. Friend them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. Get their email addresses. Always.
  4. Find Ways to Serve Them. Don't use Facebook to sell and tell - use it to listen and help. When an old client posts "I have the flu" on Facebook - pick up the phone or send a get well card. They'll be amazed... just don't stalk. That's creepy.
  5. Let Them Know You'd Appreciate New Business. If you always seem overworked - nobody will want to burden you with new clients. Think about it! Let your clients know you want to help there friends.
  6. Don't offer commissions to everyone. Yes- sometimes it helps to offer a percentage - but many times it can insult your client. If they feel you are bribing them - or exploiting their friends they won't want to refer clients to you. Use commissions with other event vendors only.
  7. Tell Them What Kinds of Clients You Want. Don't assume your wedding photography client knows you also do family portraits. Educate your clients about your business.
  8. Expand You Definitions. Are you only an A/V company or are you an event production solution? Or are you a partner in your client's success... above and beyond the event?
  9. Love. That's right. Love and serve your clients to the best of your ability. It will come back to you in a big way.

Growing your event business isn't that hard when you do an amazing job and love your clients. Make sure you're marketing your business in the most effective way. There are many free internet tools that make attracting more event clients easier than ever before.

We all love parties, whether it be a fancy wedding party or some casual get-together. If you are throwing a party in a restaurant, then you need not worry about the catering. However, if you plan to arrange a party at your house, you can well imagine how difficult it could be to cook food for 20 to 30 guests. In such a case, it is advisable that one hire a good catering service to do the job. There are many catering businesses open in all around, but in order to figure out which one is the best, you need to judge them on the following criteria:

Variety and Quality of Food:

It's needless to say that the food is the most important thing in a party. A good catering service must provide tasty, hygienic and fresh food. Moreover, the caterer should provide variety in the dishes served. It's probable that the people you are going to invite will want to eat food based on their own personal preference as well as religious and cultural values. For example if your friend is a Muslim, he/she will only eat kosher food, whereas a vegetarian will only eat vegetarian food. So, the best way to cater to these possible differences is to have a buffet in which you can incorporate all kinds of dishes, depending upon the types of guests invited. The caterer should also provide the option of offering food from exotic cuisines, so that one can entertain foreign guests as well as local ones.

Variety of Services:

Alongside food, the ambiance of the party also plays an important role in making a party success. A good caterer provides complete decoration for the party and has a team of expert interior designers that add make such an effort professional. Aside from all this, a good caterer also provides the relevant furniture, for example buffet tables, cutlery crockery, warmers, trash bags and other such accessories. This is the differentiating point between mediocre and excellent catering service; if a caterer does all this, then you have definitely made the right choice.

Presenting Style:

Imagine how exciting it would be if the theme of your party is Cowboy, and the waiters are wearing cowboy hats, long boots and a hunter in one hand while they are serving to your guests. This sort of thing is what good caterers offer. Along with good food, excellent catering services do their presentations, food and otherwise, with style.

Economic factors do obviously play an important role in your selection of such a caterer but there is always a payoff between more money and good service in any decision one makes. You can always optimize your party requirements according to your financial condition. However, if you budget is no issue, then a good caterer meeting the above criteria will make your party a huge success, and that's absolutely guaranteed. So, don't forget to look at these things before you plan a party. Cheers!

Bare bones start-up costs including a rough estimate for liability insurance would be less than $2500 if you did your homework and found some deals along the way.

Recommended experience, skills, and training:
Although college degrees are available for an event planner, most of the entrepreneurs within the industry do not have one. The majority of business owners started out in catering or business meeting planning and expanded into event planning. However, many owners have attended classes and attained certification. For everyone else, consider your friends and family if you do not already own a computer or have the cash.

The income potential of learning for an event planner is only limited by your ability to sell yourself and your services to the clients. With over $500 billion dollars out there up for grabs, there is no reason why you cannot see six figures within the first three years. Like any business, however, you will only be successful if you deliver unparalleled service time and time again. But, if you love planning an event and seeing people happy, then becoming a party and event planner is for you and a way towards financial independence.

Phone Skills That Book More Events

I got this question from a new marketing client of mine who founded of a new catering and event company after years of working for someone else.

I'm finally getting leads from the website! This week I got more job inquiries than I ever did before. Now my problem is selling them once they call me. How do you handle an incoming call from a prospective client who is thinking about hiring you? Thanks, L.T.   Here are a few tips I passed on to L.T. He reported back that he's much more relaxed and so far he's booked a $9,000 job using these ideas. I hope you have the same luck!

First and foremost you want to build rapport quickly. You want the caller to get a good feeling about you and your business. No, this isn't about "brown-nosing" or "sucking up" or "schmoozing." It's about attitude.

Some thoughts to consider before you pick up that phone ....

Attitude of Gratitude. Be happy that somebody is giving you the opportunity to serve them in a way that allows you to use your gifts and talents and make a profit. Don't act grateful ... BE grateful.

Attitude of Service. Be ready to help the caller in whatever way you can - even if that means sending the caller to your competition.

Attitude of Enthusiasm. When I coached L.T. we recorded some of his phone conversations (you can record your side of the call without getting permission) and he was shocked. He was trying to sound like a "business professional." He sounded as enthusiastic as a Department of Motor Vehicles employee on a Friday afternoon.

Unless you only cater at funerals and bankruptcy hearings most customers are enthusiastic about the event they're planning. They want to deal with a relaxed, confident and happy event professional.

The Most Important Person in the World.

Dale Carnegie taught us to "Make other people feel important - and do it sincerely." How do you do that? Ask questions that you really want the answers to and listen carefully to the answers. When was the last time you spoke to someone who really cared about your opinion? Didn't that make you feel great? Really try to understand what the client is saying - so few people do.

Care. Don't ask about a client's fishing trophy if you really don't care. That's cheap, insincere and transparent. My style of selling is strictly business - I don't talk about sports, the weather or how nice your tie is. When I meet you as a prospective client I always get right down to business - not my business - your business.

Prepare. I go into every meeting prepared - I don't ask questions that a professional should already know. If I'm trying to get a trade show account I know everything I can about the industry, the company, competition and their latest products. If I'm pursuing a sales incentive meeting I know the names and territories of the Sales Managers, the size of the sales force and the demographics of the attendees before I approach the buyer. Knowing what you're talking about goes much further than unctuous glad-handing.

How do you prepare for an unexpected telephone inquiry? Stop winging it!

Intake Form. Type up an intake form to capture all the information you'll need ... and include questions that your competition isn't asking.

High Value Questions. Make a list of smart questions that increase your understanding and improve your professional image. List questions that make the client say, "Wow, I'm so glad you asked me that - I didn't think of that!"

Major Sales Tip! Always ask the caller if they've ever hired or experienced a service like yours before. Then ask, "What did you like about it?" and "What didn't you like about it." Get the answers to these two questions and your callers will have told you exactly how to sell to them.

When L.T. asked a client what she didn't like about a previous caterer, the client said she didn't like the servers - they didn't look professional. L.T. emailed over photos and testimonials about of his wait staff . He got the job!

Objections. Start keeping track of all the objections you get on the phone ... and then prepare a presentation that preempts them. The best way to handle an objection is to structure your presentation so that they never become an issue - but be careful about preventing clients from voicing their legitimate concerns.

L.T. thought that by saying to callers, "Our prices aren't cheap - because we don't do cheap work and our clients only want the best," eliminated the price objection. It didn't - it made the caller feel too embarrassed from sharing price concerns - and made L.T. sound like a jerk!

Sales Script. No, you never want to read a sales script to a caller and end up sounding like a phony telemarketer ... but you do want to make sure you give the caller a great sounding presentation.

Here's how to write a great telephone sales script: Don't write it - speak it.

Record and transcribe yourself talking to clients. Listen to your recording with a colleague or coach and pick out the parts you feel do a great job selling your services. Transcribe those phrases - exactly as you spoke them - and create your "pitch." It will sound like you - but your best you!

Corporate social gatherings are staple in every business or industry. It is when important matters related to the trade are discussed such as in conferences and summits. The attendees of these business gatherings are employees of the company or corporation plus other stock holders or potential business partners for a possible collaboration. And where there are gatherings, big or small, there should be foods and drinks available for all participants. These provisions are served and supplied by particular catering services which are equipped to host such commercial events.

How to Host an Unforgettable Company Event

Careful and strategic planning is of the essence in hosting a company event. Hosting a simple domestic party is already a strenuous job, much more when holding a business gathering as there are a lot of professionals and business executives who might grace the special corporate event. There are a lot of things to be prepared such as the venue and the catering services. First and foremost the organizer should consider what effect the affair should have or what theme is applicable for the day's purpose. This is important in order to provide an atmosphere for the attendees that are conducive and perfect for socialization and business entrepreneurship. After determining this, the location or the venue where the event will take place can be selected. The place must be perfect enough to accommodate the number of expected guests. It should also be a place that conforms to the ambiance the organizer wishes to provide the event's participants. Aside from these, the place of the gathering must, with all possibilities, be situated in an area that is accessible to all employees and guests of the gathering. The seating arrangement is also one to include in the planning.

Another consideration essential to the event's planning is the budget. The organizer must include in the budget not only the venue or the chairs to be seated on by the attendees but also the food provision and catering services for the conference.

The Best caterer for the Corporate Event

While it is true that catering services are abundant in number these days, not all are capable of hosting a formal dining experience. Some caterers are only adept at cooking delectable dishes while there are also those catering services which can offer an excellent service complete with awesome cuisines, themed arrangement and excellent professional services. Such catering services are required for the business conferences.

The selected provider must be able to interpret what the event organizer requires and apply this. Caterers who can prepare various dishes to suit whatever palates and gastronomy of any provenance, culture and religion may also be hired as there will be diverse people of different backgrounds attending the corporate meeting. The catering services suited for a corporate occasion must be flexible, capable of multitasking and most of all, serve the most delectable and freshest dishes to everyone in the conference. If this caterer can think of a more ingenious and clever concepts suited to the event, the better.

Event Management

Best Solutions for Functions

Corporate event management involves managing various corporate events that can be a special media event, an internal event or event open to the public such as a fundraising gala. They are usually managed by a professional planner whose specialty is corporate events. An experienced event planner has the expertise to research and plan a successful event from start to finish.

Some of the common examples of corporate events are launching a product, road show, galas and media event with corporate sponsorship. The events are managed according to their respective nature, keeping in mind the aim of the event, the audience to be reached and the content of the message to be transferred.

Event Waitrons

There are a number of events and celebrations that require the help of a caterer. They include weddings, victory parties, birthday parties, campaign fundraisers, corporate events and other get-togethers. Each occasion or event requires different preparations, different types of food and different types of decorations. A good caterer can help you with all the preparation, plus guarantee you a delicious menu that your guests will not soon forget.

Planning and hosting any major event is not a simple task because there are number of things that need to be considered to make the event run smoothly. One of the first things to consider is the type of food service that will be provided. For example, do you want a sit down meal or is a buffet more appropriate. If you opt for a sit down meal, there are appetizers, salads, entrées, and desserts to think about. A buffet can offer a variety of choices arranged on long tables, or you can choose to go with stations where some of the food is prepared as a guest waits (spaghetti dishes are a good example). Each has its advantages and disadvantages and the host should be able to determine which one is the most appropriate to use.

Any caterer that you hire will need a lot of space to work in, so make sure that the food preparation area is large enough to accommodate the caterer and the staff. Also, make sure that the banquet area is large enough to accommodate the number of guests who will be attending the event. There is nothing worse than a crowded room, with tables that are too close and too many guests at each table.

Always sample a caterer's menu and make sure that you get quotes based on the number of people who are attending your event. This should include items like alcohol. Determine ahead of time if the bar will be "open" (free drinks) and whether or not there will be wine bottles on each table. Keeping all these details straight with the caterer will afford him or her the opportunity to realize your expectations, as well as prevent any conflicts in the final bill.
